Latest Issue 18 Family finance

New Zealand doesn't tax a child's investments the way Australia or the UK does. Most parents route the money the wrong way anyway.

A child with their own investment account and no other income can pay as little as 10.5% tax on it - lower than almost anyone reading this pays on their own money. Put the same money in a family trust instead, meaning to do the responsible thing, and it can get taxed at 39%.

KiwiSaver taxes you every year and nothing at the end. Here's why that might be the better deal.
Most New Zealanders assume KiwiSaver is a worse setup than an Australian super account, a UK pension, or a US 401(k) - because those all let you put money in before tax. Run the numbers through to withdrawal and the picture flips for a lot of people.

Term deposits, Kiwi Bonds, bond funds. Same "safe money," four different tax bills.
The OCR was hiked to 2.50% on 8 July and most bank term deposit comparison sites will show you the same thing: a table of rates, sorted highest to lowest. What almost none of them show you is that two people earning the identical rate on the identical amount can walk away with very different after-tax income, depending on which of four products they used to earn it.

Most NZ investors own six ETFs. Two would do the job better.
Kernel and Smart (the ETF issuer you know as Smartshares - they dropped the name earlier this year) between them list close to 70 funds. Almost nobody needs more than two or three of them, and a lot of portfolios I see are quietly holding the same market twice under different tickers.
