Writing about investing from New Zealand, for New Zealanders
I've spent the last 19 years inside New Zealand financial services, building the products Kiwis actually use to invest, save and manage risk.
That includes years working on KiwiSaver strategy and wealth products at ANZ, ASB and Kiwi Wealth, and digital platforms used by hundreds of thousands of New Zealand investors. I've sat in the rooms where these products get designed, and I've seen firsthand how much of the advice floating around online simply doesn't apply once you're filing as a New Zealand tax resident.
The Southern Portfolio exists because I got tired of reading investing content that assumes you're American, or that talks around the actual mechanics of investing from here without naming them. This isn't a tip sheet and it isn't financial advice. It's the explanation I wish existed when I started taking this seriously myself: how FIF tax actually works, which platforms make sense for which kind of portfolio, what currency exposure really costs you, and how to think about building a portfolio when half the content online wasn't written with you in mind.
I write one issue a week. No sponsorships dictating the angle, no pretending there's a single right answer for everyone. Just a straight account of what investing from New Zealand actually involves, written by someone who works in this industry and is figuring it out in public alongside you.
The Southern Portfolio is general commentary and education, not personalised financial advice. Nothing here accounts for your individual circumstances. If you need advice specific to your situation, talk to a licensed financial adviser.
